ADA Signs, Braille Signs & Interior Signs

What are ADA Signs and Braille Signs?

There is confusion about ADA Signs and Braille Signs. Even though many ADA Signs make use of braille, ADA Signs are any sign that must conform to the ADA Regulations and can be monument signs, overhead signs and other types of architectural signs. Braille signs are typically permanent room signs, exit signs, and in general any sign that informs someone regarding the usage of a particular space in a public facility. Thus, even public places such as restaurants must comply by using restroom signs and bathroom signs conforming to the ADA Accessibility guidelines or ADAAG. Another way to think about these classifications is to remember that all Braille Signs are ADA Signs but not all ADA Signs are Braille Signs.

For example, overhead signs are placed a minimum of seven (7) feet from floor to the bottom of the sign. Obviously, the inclusion of braille is not a consideration as those that read braille signs should not be reaching over their heads to read a sign. Even still, there are ADAAG guidelines for letter type, letter size and color contrast. Where local ordinances conflict or surpass federal ADAAG requirements the local ordinance will take precendence.

Generally speaking, all permanent rooms and means of egress should be marked with braille signs and overheads and other types of architectural signage will conform to ADAAG guidelines for ADA Signs. Signs for advertising and marketing purposes, temporary signs, company logos and names are examples of signs that do not have to comply.

Who Uses ADA Signs and Braille Signs?

Public places that have rooms which are public access rooms such as restrooms or bathrooms must comply by using braille restroom signs or braille bathroom signs and braille exit signs. Larger public facilities such as hospitals, health facilities, hotels, and other public places with permanent rooms must use braille sign to denote these locations as well as braille exit signs. An example of the former type of facility is a restaurant or similar.
